Retrograde: Earth orbits the Sun along with the other planets, like cars driving along the freeway in individual lanes. Because of varying orbit length of each planet and their respective proximity to the Sun, planets overtake each other in their orbit. When Earth overtakes another planet in its orbit, it appears from our viewpoint that the planet we are passing is moving backward. This is apparent retrograde motion.
